About Us
Hey Caregiver! was born out of my own experience as a caregiver to my Mama Joan.
On August 5, 2018, while serving as a Community Health Peace Corps volunteer in Eswatini, Africa, I learned that she was on life support and needed to have a brain craniotomy immediately or else she would die. The next day I was on a flight home to Baltimore, MD, and, after landing on US soil on August 7, 2018, I became a caregiver in every sense of the word. This was not my first time as a caregiver. I cared for my maternal grandmother in 2004 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and in 2014 cared for my father when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable not curable cancer.
Interestingly enough, I didn't identify as a caregiver when I took care of my grandmother and father. However, this time was different. After, navigating this journey primarily alone as a Black female caregiver I was inspired to create the community I so desperately needed. A community of family caregivers/carees who rock their role loud, proud, and with style!!
As caregivers, we often let ourselves go and don’t take time for ourselves. However, when we look and smell good, we feel BETTER!
